A Little About Me
I've been designing and building websites since 1999 — over 25 years in the digital world. I started as a freelance designer, working on everything from small business sites to large-scale platforms. Over the years, I've seen the web evolve through dozens of technologies, frameworks, and design trends. But one thing that never changed was the importance of trust and reliability online.
SSL — A baseline of trust on every website
I installed my first SSL certificate back in December 2015. At the time, it was mainly because Google hinted that HTTPS would help with search rankings. Since then, I've watched SSL go from something technical and optional to something absolutely essential — a baseline of trust on every website.
Why I Built ChillSSL
I didn't set out to build a SaaS product. I built ChillSSL for myself, after I missed an SSL renewal on a client site. I kicked myself and swore it would never happen again.
SSL monitoring is a pain. Certificates are scattered across:
- Hosting providers
- Domain registrars
- IT teams and third parties
I wanted one place — a clear, central dashboard — that could:
- List all my SSL certificates
- Warn me when they were close to expiring
- Send me simple, reliable email reminders
So I built ChillSSL for myself... and IT teams, web agencies, marketing departments, hosting companies... anyone who cares about website and brand reputation and security.
Since building ChillSSL, I've had far better visibility over all my clients' certificates. But it's been an eye-opener monitoring other sites too. ChillSSL has caught the following SSL expiries before their internal teams even noticed — and I'm not even paid to monitor them!
- A global optical brand
- One of the world's most recognised car brands
- Ireland's best-known property portal
- A global analytics firm in the financial industry
- A national energy company
Every one of those certificates expired unnoticed until ChillSSL flagged it first.
Which is why I found myself up at 3AM signing up for LinkedIn Premium so I could message the CEOs and IT teams actually responsible. Because when you see a major brand's SSL certificate expire and their customers getting security warnings, you can't just sit there and do nothing.
Honestly, having ChillSSL doesn't mean you'll never have an SSL expiry again — but the chances are greatly reduced. Ironically, while launching ChillSSL on a new server, I had an SSL issue myself. They're sneaky! But this time, the app alerted me instantly and I fixed it in minutes.
Why It Matters
It's estimated that IT outages can cost the average company thousands per day. But with SSL outages, the damage isn't just downtime — it's loss of trust, lost leads, and uncertainty, as users see browser warnings about hackers or insecure connections.
ChillSSL helps you be the first to know about your own SSL expiry — before your boss, your clients, or your customers.
Built by a Designer Who Hates Bad UX
Unlike most monitoring tools, ChillSSL isn't just about uptime graphs or error codes. It's designed for clarity, not clutter.
Because the goal isn't to monitor certificates — it's to prevent those awkward, avoidable failures that stop business in its tracks.
To make SSL monitoring beautifully simple, impossible to ignore, and reliable enough that no one ever has to explain an expired certificate again.
